The CNC Lathe Machinist I operates CNC lathes under supervision while learning setups, basic programming, GD&T, quality standards, and troubleshooting.

Position Summary

The CNC Lathe Machinist 1 is an entry-level machining role responsible for operating CNC and Swiss lathes under supervision to produce precision components that meet customer specifications and company quality standards. This position performs basic machine setups, loads materials, monitors production runs, inspects finished parts, and maintains a safe and organized work environment.

The CNC Lathe Machinist 1 is expected to learn machining fundamentals, blueprint reading, and company processes while developing skills for advancement within the organization.

This role is designed as a developmental position with advancement opportunities to Machinist II based on skill growth, reliability, quality performance, and machine proficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Machine Operation & Production

  • Operate CNC and Swiss lathes under supervision
  • Perform basic machine setups, tool changes, and offsets as trained
  • Load raw materials and monitor machines during operation
  • Produce parts according to work instructions, blueprints, and quality standards
  • Record production counts, downtime, and job-related data accurately
  • Maintain machine utilization and support production schedules

Quality Control

  • Use precision measuring instruments such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, and indicators
  • Inspect first-piece and in-process parts to verify conformance to specifications
  • Identify and report quality issues, tool wear, or process concerns promptly
  • Help reduce scrap and rework through attention to detail and process discipline

Blueprint Reading & Technical Learning

  • Read and interpret basic blueprints, dimensions, and tolerances
  • Apply fundamental GD&T concepts as trained
  • Learn machine controls, tooling applications, and machining processes
  • Participate in cross-training, coaching, and continuous improvement efforts

Safety & Housekeeping

  • Follow all company safety policies, PPE requirements, and machine safety procedures
  • Keep workstation clean, organized, and free of hazards
  • Support 5S and lean manufacturing initiatives

Teamwork & Communication

  • Follow direction from supervisors, lead machinists, and senior team members
  • Communicate production status, quality concerns, and equipment issues clearly
  • Work cooperatively with team members across shifts and departments

Qualifications

Required Experience

  • High school diploma or GED preferred
  • Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn machining trade
  • Basic math skills including decimals, fractions, and measurements
  • Ability to read measuring tools accurately
  • Dependable attendance and punctuality

Preferred Experience

  • Prior manufacturing or machining experience
  • Exposure to CNC equipment or technical training programs
  • Basic blueprint reading knowledge

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Frequent bending, reaching, and repetitive hand motions
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with noise, coolant, and moving equipment

Success Metrics / Performance Expectations

  • Attendance rate of 98% or higher
  • Daily production goal attainment of 90% or higher
  • Scrap rate of 2% or less
  • Setup times at or below standard expectations
  • Accurate use of measuring tools and inspection methods
  • Consistent adherence to safety and housekeeping standards
  • Demonstrated progress in technical skills and independent operation

Pay Range: $22.00 – $26.00 / hour
